GAME Plan Progress

So far, I am pleased with my progress in carrying each of the goals in my GAME Plan. Although it’s an interesting time of the year to be working towards goals, since the school year is winding down, I still believe I am making positive steps toward achieving my goals. My goals are:
1)      Develop more personalized learning activities to address the needs and interests of various types of learners.
2)      Use technology more effectively to communicate with parents and students next school year.

At my last grade-level department meeting, I introduced the idea of developing more personalized learning activities for various types of learners throughout the school year next year. We discussed possible ideas for activities that might be appropriate for various units, and also agreed to bring any books we might have with helpful ideas to our next meeting. I feel that the best way to approach introducing more personalized learning activities is to tackle one unit at a time. It is overwhelming for me to think about how to differentiate for every single unit throughout the school year, but if I make it a goal to only differentiate for my unit on Ancient India, for example, that seems to be a more manageable and attainable goal.

I am very eager to begin work on my goal of using technology to communicate more effectively with parents and students. My team for next year is scheduled to meet within the next couple of weeks to begin working on our team goals. I have already let my colleagues know that further use of technology for communication is one of my goals. Many of my other team members are proponents of technology use as well, and they are eager to pursue this goal along with me. So far, I have spoken with other teachers who have websites or communicate with parents through e-mail newsletters to garner some feedback. Hearing what they like and also what they might do differently in the future has been helpful to me so far. Just like my first goal, though, I feel I need to approach one thing at a time. I may become overwhelmed if I try to communicate with parents and/or students via both a website and e-mail newsletters. Therefore, my plan for now is to focus on creating a website. Once I feel comfortable with that, then I can move forward and explore other ways of communicating with parents and students using technology.

  1. It sounds like you are on the right track. I like that you have broken your goals down to a micro level and are going to take them one at a time. I personally do things that way quite often, too. It helps you feel like you're making meaningful progress each time you check something off the list!

My suggestion would be to focus on the development of an interactive website versus preparing a newsletter. The website will give you some much flexibility with what you can do. You can broadcast an assignment, you can interact with students or parents, you can post threaded discussion questions for your students to answer, you can post links to relative reading, etc. etc.

While you can do a couple of these things with a newsletter, that is largely a one-way medium and therefore isn't a good way to develop long-term interaction. Since it sounds like your goal is to create a community rich with dialogue, I'd definitely go with the website over the newsletter.

    Good luck!

  2. Andrea,
I agree with you. Don't overwhelm yourself. I, too, am planning on only differentiating a few lessons. I get so excited about trying all of these technology tools out and then find out our district internet blocks the some of them. I would hate to go to all of the work and find out I cannot use them.
Carrie mentioned and interactive website. Exactly what is this? It sounds interesting.

  3. Hi Andrea,
I really like your idea of creating and maintaining a class website where you
could communicate with parents. Google sites is an easy and free website creating and hosting tool that with little time and effort you could have a site up and running. There are many tutorials on youtube to guide you through this process if you reach a point where you need some assistance.

The newsletter is also a great idea. Using and embedding a Google Doc into a google site makes this pretty easy to do. Edit your document in the editor and your edits automatically appear on the website where you have the document embedded. Edit in one place and update in many.

Just a few thoughts. If you need any guidance, I would be more than happy to help out. You can also find more information on this at caddiscaster.com, and the teachers and websites tab on the left.

  5. Andrea,
Sounds like you have been doing well in your goals thus far. I was wondering if you already had a newsletter that you sent out or if this would be a new piece of communication that would be implemented.
While i agree with Carri about the website being better than the newsletter to start with, there is a lot to do with a website and not every parent will want to join in the process. So, you have to meet them where they are sometimes.
It also sounds like you have a great PLC you can use at your school.
